Are you Prepared for a Power Outage

Are you Prepared for a Power Outage
3:02

Power outages can happen without warning, whether it's from a major storm, equipment failure, or something more unpredictable. The good news? With the right preparation, you can minimize the disruption and keep yourself and others safe until the lights come back on.

At DSP Insurance, we believe safety starts before disaster strikes. That’s why we’ve compiled key tips to help you handle power outages with confidence.

Before the Outage: Prepare Like a Pro

  1. Build a Power Outage Kit
Don’t wait until the lights go out to gather essentials. A well-stocked emergency kit should include:
  • Flashlights (not candles)
  • Extra batteries
  • Bottled water and non-perishable food
  • A manual can opener
  • First aid supplies and necessary medications
  1. Stay Charged and Informed
Keep your phone and backup power banks fully charged, especially when bad weather is in the forecast. Sign up for alerts from your utility company and local emergency services to stay informed.  Have a conversation with your family to ensure everyone is aware of what to do & how to stay in touch during a power outage.
  2. Freeze Smart
Worried about food spoilage? Freeze containers of water ahead of time. These ice blocks help keep your fridge and freezer cold longer during an outage.
  3. Prep Your Vehicle
Gas stations may be out of service during outages. Keep your tank full and have a car charger handy so you can power up devices in an emergency.
  4. Backup Your Critical Needs
If you rely on power-dependent devices like oxygen machines or refrigerated medications, talk with your provider about a battery backup or alternate power solution. Have a backup plan. Make sure you have advised us, your insurance agent, if you have an automatic generator as most carriers give a discount for this.
  5. Know Your Local Resources
Many towns have emergency plans, shelters, or warming/cooling centers. Get to know what’s available in your community before you need it.

During the Outage: Safety First

  • Stay Cool or Warm:In hot weather, drink plenty of water and use battery-powered fans if available. In cold weather, layer up and use blankets instead of space heaters unless they’re approved for indoor use.
  • Unplug Electronics: Protect appliances and sensitive electronics from power surges by unplugging them until the electricity is restored.
  • Avoid Unsafe Heating or Cooking Methods: Never use outdoor grills or generators indoors, they produce deadly carbon monoxide.
  • Check on Others: If it’s safe, check on neighbors, especially elderly or medically vulnerable individuals.

After the Power Returns

Once power is restored, check your food for spoilage, reset your devices, and restock your kit with anything you used. It’s also a great time to evaluate what worked, and what you’d improve for next time.

Proactive Protection Makes All the Difference
Power outages are disruptive, but they don’t have to be devastating. A little planning today can save you time, money, and stress down the road.
