Most business owners believe they've checked the cybersecurity box. They have an IT provider. They've purchased cyber liability insurance. Their employees have completed phishing training. They've invested in technology and feel reasonably confident they're protected.
A few years ago, that may have been enough.
Today, it isn't.
Artificial intelligence has fundamentally changed the cybersecurity landscape. Attacks are happening faster, businesses of every size have become attractive targets, and many organizations are still relying on security strategies designed for yesterday's threats.
The reality is simple: cybersecurity isn't what it was even 18 months ago.

## AI Has Changed the Rules of Cybersecurity
Cybersecurity has always been a game of leapfrog between attackers and defenders. Businesses develop stronger defenses, attackers find new ways around them, and the cycle continues.
Artificial intelligence has dramatically accelerated that process.
Historically, businesses may have had weeks or even months between the discovery of a software vulnerability and attackers exploiting it. Today, that timeline has been compressed to days and, in some cases, hours.
AI has also lowered the barrier to entry for cybercriminals. Attackers can now automate phishing attempts, identify vulnerabilities faster, and target organizations more efficiently than ever before.
Businesses that once believed they were "too small" to become targets should reconsider that assumption. If your organization stores employee information, processes payments, uses cloud-based applications, or relies upon technology to operate, it has something worth protecting.
Size is no longer a meaningful defense.
## Cyber Insurance Isn't a Cybersecurity Strategy
One of the biggest misconceptions business owners have is believing cyber liability insurance protects them from cyberattacks.
It doesn't.
Cyber insurance remains an important part of an organization's overall risk management strategy, but it should never be viewed as a replacement for cybersecurity itself.
Depending on your policy, cyber insurance may help cover:
- Breach response costs
- Business interruption losses
- Regulatory defense expenses
- Third-party liability claims
- Forensic investigations
- Public relations and notification costs
What cyber insurance doesn't do is prevent an attack from happening.
Insurance transfers financial risk. Cybersecurity reduces operational risk. Businesses need both working together.
One of the most important takeaways from our conversation was the importance of treating your cyber liability application with the same level of care as a tax return. Every answer matters. Incorrect or incomplete answers can create significant problems when claims arise.

## Is Your IT Provider Actually Protecting Your Business?
Many business owners assume their IT provider handles cybersecurity. Sometimes that's true. Often, it isn't.
Traditional IT support and cybersecurity are not synonymous.
An organization may have excellent IT support while still lacking:
- Continuous security monitoring
- Vulnerability management
- Incident response planning
- Disaster recovery testing
- Security governance and policies
Understanding exactly what services you're receiving is one of the most important conversations a business owner can have.
Ask questions such as:
- Who monitors our environment after business hours?
- Have our backups been tested recently?
- How quickly are vulnerabilities addressed?
- Who responds if ransomware occurs?
- What happens if our systems become unavailable tomorrow?
If those answers aren't immediately clear, it's worth continuing the conversation.
## Cybersecurity Is No Longer a Once-a-Year Exercise
Many organizations think about cybersecurity when one of three things occurs:
- Their insurance renews.
- They're completing a compliance questionnaire.
- Something goes wrong.
Unfortunately, attackers don't operate on annual schedules.
Cybersecurity has become an ongoing business process that requires continuous improvement. Businesses should regularly evaluate their technology, security controls, employee training, and incident response procedures.
Artificial intelligence has also created entirely new challenges for organizations. Employees are increasingly using AI tools to write content, analyze data, automate processes, and improve productivity. While these tools create tremendous opportunities, they also introduce new risks if organizations haven't established appropriate policies and guardrails.
Cybersecurity today isn't simply about having the right tools in place. It's about understanding how people, processes, technology, and governance work together to protect your organization.
The businesses that will be most successful over the next decade won't necessarily be the organizations spending the most money on cybersecurity. They'll be the organizations consistently improving their security posture over time.
## Five Questions Every Business Owner Should Be Asking
If there's one takeaway from our conversation, it's this: business owners don't need to have all the answers, but they should be asking the right questions.
Start here:
1. Do we understand what our cyber liability policy actually covers?
2. Do we know what cybersecurity services our IT provider is responsible for today?
3. Have we tested our backups, recovery procedures, and incident response plans recently?
4. Do we understand what AI tools employees are currently using throughout our organization?
5. If we experienced a cyber incident tomorrow, do we know exactly who would respond and what happens next?
If any of those questions are difficult to answer, that's okay. Identifying potential gaps is the first step toward addressing them.
## Cybersecurity Requires More Than a Checkbox
Cybersecurity isn't an annual conversation that happens during your insurance renewal. It's an ongoing business risk that deserves the same attention as finance, operations, compliance, and employee safety.
The businesses that will be be best positioned over the next decade won't necessarily be the ones spending the most on cybersecurity. They'll be the organizations that understand their risks, continuously improve their security posture, and bring the right experts to the table when making technology and insurance decisions.
